Installing A Tialgate Handle Flip Kit

Step 1

Begin by removing the original handle from the tailgate. There are small clips that hold the gate latch rods into the handle assembly. Make sure not to damage these when removing rods from the assembly.

For this installation, we are using a 1973-87 GM Fleetside Tail Gate. Other tail gates are different but operate and are re-located in a similar fashion.

Step 2

The handle re-locator is positioned so that the bolt holes on the tail gate are in the same position as on the re-locator. The difference between the bolt holes is that they are a mirror image on some vehicle models. Make certain that the holes are lined up across the tail gate and centered vertically.

Measure from 1/8-1/4 inch inside of the re-locator mounting holes and mark the tail gate.

Step 3

We have used masking tape to outline the area to be removed. Make sure to mark the lines across the tailgate for the re-locator handle mounting holes for reference when setting new bracket.

Step 4

Using a cut off tool, plasma cutter, air saw, or your tool of choice, cut out the area for the new bracket.

Step 5

With the new bracket area removed, grind or file sharp edges for safety.

Step 6

Line up the re-locater bracket handle mounting holes with those marked on the tail gate.

Mark the bracket mounting holes and use ½ in. Self tapping screws to mount.

Finally, remove bracket, install latch rods, replace bracket, test to be sure handle is pulling rods fully, and install gate.
